Seeing Christ in Others
I have a friend who started a non profit organization called Laces of Love. Laces of Love will provide needy children with a new pair of shoes at the beginning of each school. When my friend told me the story of how she got the idea for Laces, my reaction was: What a true gesture of love! Seeing her charity, I can see Christ in her from the selfless love she shows to the poor. She and her sister got the idea from watching a movie about two poor children who shared one pair of shoes between them. She applied the gifts God gave her to everyday life and decided to start a charitable organization that provides shoes to needy children in Collier County. With God's grace and much prayer and hard work, she has managed to provide a new pair of shoes to almost every child in this area. How cool is that! Laces of Love does not ask for money and she doesn't earn a dime from it. She buys the shoes herself and gives them away through the schools or other places. The principals of schools and heads of other organizations will tell my friend that a certain child needs a pair of shoes, they give her the size, and then she goes to buy the shoes. I think it's a great organization because the people who are a part of it are not seeking to gain anything for themselves. Rather, they see a need and want to fill it. People can donate money (if they want) or used pairs of shoes that are in good condition. Throughout Laces of Love's existence my friend has seen children come to school in ragged torn up shoes with no bottoms or soles. It is like coming in bare feet. But when they are given a new pair of shoes, their faces light up with joy and they are so grateful to have the shoes. It changes their lives and gives them a sense of pride that they are worth something. To me she manifests Christ through her words and actions because she just loves people for who they are, faults and all. She is always reaching out and helping those in need. Plus, she has a good sense of humor! Humor and being able to laugh is essential to life.
